Irena Suljic
Irena started her fencing career as an épée fencer, winning multiple National Championships in both individual and team events, as well as other domestic and regional tournaments. These achievements led to my selection for the Croatian National épée team, with which I competed in several European and World Championships, including the 2003 Summer Universiade, before retiring from competition in 2006.
Since then, I have built a career in coaching, refereeing, and sports administration. I graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts (2005) and the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Zagreb (2011), qualifying as a fencing coach. I have coached at CAFC Mladost, FC Zagreb, and FC Lokomotiva, working with national team athletes, while also serving on the Executive Boards of the Croatian Fencing Federation, the Zagreb Fencing Federation, and CAFC Mladost. In 2024, I became a National Referee in épée and have acted as a federation delegate at Croatian tournaments.
Committed to safeguarding and athlete welfare, I obtained the EFC Safeguarding Officer certificate in 2023 and the Safeguarding in Sports certificate from the Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland in 2025. I joined the EFC Safeguarding Commission in 2024 and served as Safeguarding Officer at the 2025 European Cadet and Junior Championships in Antalya. Currently, I am the Child Protection Officer for the Croatian Fencing Federation, pursuing further Safeguarding in Sport education through the Croatian Olympic Committee, while continuing to organize domestic and international fencing events, including Junior World Cups and European and World Championships.
